Greggs-themed tourist trail to open in UK first as steak bake lovers unite

Get your teeth into this, steak bake and sausage roll lovers… a tourist trail dedicated to Greggs bakeries.

The giant now has 2,300 shops in the UK, selling savoury pastries, yum yums and iced buns to the nation.

And the chain recently announced plans to open 150 new shops, including more 24-hour drive-thrus.

Now, a travel writer has fans salivating after drawing up a road trip that takes in some of the more notable branches.

When the Greggs Heritage Trail was shared on a Facebook page dedicated to food, one person wrote: “I’m defo signing up for this.” While another added: “This is my dream holiday.”

The tour starts in Newcastle, the birthplace of Greggs. It was here, in 1939, that John Gregg started his door-to-door
bakery round.

In 1951, Greggs opened its first shop, No.69, on Gosforth High Street. Today, the city is still the spiritual home of Greggs, with more than 30 branches.

In Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, “Ye Olde Greggs” is housed in a 17th Century property on Abbeygate Street, with glazing dating back to 1797.

Barry, in south Wales, has one of a handful of Greggs Outlet stores selling cheaper day-old goodies.

Edinburgh’s Shandwick Place has the only Greggs with bronze doors and a Latin motto “ditat servata fides”, or “loyalty enriches” on display. While Birmingham has the biggest and “most Instagrammable” outlet.

“one-of-a-kind, self-service coffee cart."

While Truro’s branch – deep in Cornish pasty country – is proving a big hit with locals and tourists alike.
