Humans ‘will have achieved immortality by 2031’, futurist scientist predicts

A scientist claims that humans are close to cracking the code to immortality and could even happen in the next decade.

Futurist and computer scientist Ray Kurzweil believes humans are on the brink of mastering artificial intelligence (AI), and that when this is achieved, there will no longer be any need for humans to live in their physical body.

Shockingly, Kurzweil claims such a feat could be possible by as early as 2030.

The expert has previously made a number of startlingly accurate predictions about technology.

Back in 1990, he predicted that the new millennium would see a computer capable of beating the world’s best human chess player, which duly came true.

He also foresaw handheld devices taking over our lives.

Now he claims that AI will surpass human levels of intelligence by 2029.

The following year however, he says we will have reached computer power so high, that immortality be within our grasp.

Speaking to Futurism, he said: “2029 is the consistent date I have predicted for when an AI will pass a valid Turing test and therefore achieve human levels of intelligence.

“I have set the date 2045 for the 'Singularity' which is when we will multiply our effective intelligence a billionfold by merging with the intelligence we have created.”

Speaking on a podcast with fellow computer scientist Lex Fridman, Kurzweil said humans will assimilate with computers to such an extent that the physical human body will become redundant.

Kurzweil claims that we will soon reach the ability to “advance human life expectancy” by “more than a year every year."

He also said that these increases will lead to immortality.

"I think we can get there by the end of this decade,” he said.

The boffin didn't stop there with his predictions though, going so far as to say that we will in the near future have microscopic robots living in our bloodstream to help regulate our body and keep us healthy.

We will also one day have the ability to uploading our thoughts and memories 'Black Mirror style' to the cloud.
