Iconic singer’s 10-year incestuous relationship with Netflix actress daughter

The lead singer of one of the most famous bands of the 1960s started a decade-long incestuous relationship with his own daughter after raping her one night in shocking claims.

John Phillips was the lead singer and writer behind The Mamas and the Papas, the band responsible for California Dreamin, Monday, Monday and Dedicated to the One I Love.

John was regarded as an extremely influential man for the music industry before he died in 2001 aged 65. Away from the bright lights, things were different however – thanks to years of drug addiction. In 1981, he was convicted of drug trafficking and his substance issues caused major health problems over his life.

However it was only eight years after his death that some extraordinary claims were made by one of his daughters.

In September 2009 his eldest daughter Mackenzie claimed that she and her father had a 10-year incestuous relationship.

In her book High on Arrival, Mackenzie wrote that the “relationship” began in 1979 when she was 19 years old. Mackenzie claimed that the abuse began after Phillips raped her while they were both under the influence of drugs on the eve of her first marriage.

Mackenzie, who starred in Netflix hit Orange is the New Black, wrote about how she had blacked out, and allegedly woke up to her father having sex with her. The next day, Mackenzie told her father, “We need to talk about how you raped me.”

Seemingly puzzled, John replied, “Raped you? Don’t you mean, ‘We made love?'".

The drug-induced incidents carried on for 10 years, with Mackenzie telling Oprah Winfrey: “It didn’t happen every day, it didn’t happen every week, but it certainly happened many times."

It only came to an end because of a pregnancy scare – with Mackenzie worrying that John was the father of her child. She says that he paid for the abortion and ended things then, saying " I never let him touch me again".

Appearing on the Behind the Velvet Rope podcast earlier this year, Mackenzie added that she only realised the relationship wasn't consensual when she first spoke with Oprah.

She told host David Yontef: "When I wrote [my memoir], I wasn't Googling, you know, 'am I allowed to say this was a relationship? Or should I call it sexual abuse?' Because I did call it a consensual relationship in the initial book.

“And then when I was on Oprah and all of the massive amount of press that I did in the days after the release of the book, I was inundated on all social media platforms with private messages saying, 'this is not a consensual relationship. There is no such thing as consent because the power dynamic between a parent and a child is so specific and there there's no such thing as consent.'

“I really had to rethink because I thought that I consented because I didn't scream and yell. I thought that I had consented for a myriad of reasons. And what I learned is that I had been groomed."

Many people who were close to both John and Mackenzie are split on the accusations.

“You should take with a grain of salt anything that’s said by a person who has had a needle stuck in their arm for 35 years,” Michelle Phillips – John’s second wife and fellow band member – told Us Weekly. “The whole story is disgusting.”.
