Welcome to what might just be the UK’s most bizarre festival where getting legless means something else entirely.
Records were smashed at this year’s Falmouth Worm Charming Championships over the weekend, as contestants managed to charm a whopping 260 worms out of the ground.
Competitors used musical instruments, garden tools, interpretive dance and more to coax earthworms out of the ground on Sunday (May 21).
This year’s efforts easily blew last year’s championship out of the water, which was disturbed by a heatwave, that saw competitors only managing to charm one worm from the ground, CornwallLive reports.
The bizarre competition was set up by artist Georgia Gendall in 2021 as the Penryn Worming Championship, but moved over to Falmouth the next year.
The winning team managed to charm (without harm) a total of 20 worms within the 30 minutes, setting a new record for the Falmouth Worm Charming Championships.
Despite this impressive number, the winners have a long way to go to beat the current world record, which was set by 20-year-old Sophie Smith, from Willaston, Cheshire, who charmed 567 worms during Britain’s World Worm Charming Championship in 2009
