Afterlife: Expert discusses ‘feelings’ in near-death experiences
Questions about the afterlife may remain unanswered for now, from a scientific perspective, but many people claim to already know what happens when we die. People who have stood on the brink of death often have memories of flying through a dark tunnel or seeing visions of their deceased loved ones. In more extreme cases, people claim to have caught a glimpse of hell or religious figures like Jesus Christ.
These profound phenomena are known as near-death experiences or NDEs and are catalogued by the Near-Death Experience Research Foundation (NDERF).
One NDERF account describes the death and resuscitation of a man who only shared his name as Dave.
According to Dave, he suffered a heart attack in 2015, which left him clinically dead for one minute.
And though his heart did not beat during this minute, Dave claims to have very strong memories of leaving his body.

Dave compared the phenomenon to being “peeled out of” his body after which he woke up.
He said: “I was in some other realm. At first, I didn’t know I had died because I was totally conscious.
“I was in total awe and amazement at my surroundings. I was surrounded by a green mist.
“There was a low level of light coming from one side. It seemed to be coming from behind the mist, like I was in sort of void.”
At this point, Dave said it took him a few seconds to realise he had died.

He did not feel any pain and instead felt as though he was wrapped in a warm fog.
Oddly enough, he recalls his body being transparent but could “just make out an outline” of it.
Dave said: “I could also see that my legs had different coloured veins or lines running through them.”
Despite not being in pain, Dave said he came to the realisation he did not want to stay in this place.
He eventually woke up in his bed and saw he was surrounded by paramedics.

Dave was told his heart had stopped for one minute and he was taken to hospital where he received two stents to treat a blockage in his heart.
He said: “It’s been over five years now with no problems. I changed my diet and exercise now.”
The account might seem extraordinary but most experts would not consider it true evidence of life after death.
According to Christof Koch of Scientific American, researchers have found similarities between NDEs and the effects of complex partial seizures.
Researchers have also proposed NDEs are hallucinations triggered by a lack of oxygen flowing to the brain during a moment of trauma, such as a heart attack.
A 2016 report in Medical News Today states: “No doubt, NDEs are a complex phenomenon with a myriad of mechanisms behind them.
“From a lack of oxygen affecting the visual system to a brain struggling to make sense of strange emotions; from the drug-like triggering of reward pathways and a host of cultural expectations.
“Being close to death (or believing that you are) is a unique physiological and psychological experience.
“It is little wonder that it produces such a confusion of sights and sounds.”
