A 67-year-old bloke has found out he has a partially formed vagina after originally being told that a lump on his leg was only a hernia.
The man from Kosovo, who was born with only one descended testicle, had gone to complain about the growth after it first began to develop around a decade earlier.
But when he came in to hospital for an operation, surgeons were stunned to discover a uterus, cervix, fallopian tube and ovary.
In addition to the surprise female genitalia, they also found a missing testicle that had been up there his entire life.
According to the New York Post, the uterus appeared as a 'pear-like structure', while a sac adjacent to it contained the fallopian tube and testicle
His mystery lump only appeared when he coughed or stood up, but was not visible at all when he was laying down.
The man was diagnosed with Persistent Mullerian duct syndrome ('PMDS'), an exceptionally rare condition in men which sees female sexual organs develop to near completion internally alongside normal external male ones.
The condition has only been recorded 200 times in medical history, with his story now documented in the Urology Case Reports journal at the University of Prishtina.
The US National Library of Medicine (NIH) says undescended testes (cryptorchidism) or soft inguinal hernias are common tell-tale signs of the syndrome, which occurs when the Müllerian duct does not break down as it does usually in male bodily development.
Some individuals with PMDS suffer from infertility or blood in their semen as a result of the condition.
It is usually only discovered when surgery is performed on the growths. A previous case documented by the NIH saw a 26-year-old man discover he had the condition when a lump failed to disappear after experiencing trauma to the groin.
