AI doom-monger Elon Musk officially unveils new artificial intelligence: Billionaire says ‘xAI’ will help solve the universe’s biggest mysteries – from Dark Matter and Dark Energy, to the ‘Fermi Paradox’ and Aliens
- Musk wants xAI to solve ‘fundamental questions’ about ‘reality’ and ‘the universe’
- Musk’s xAI team says ‘monopolization’ is biggest danger of artificial intelligence
- Current AI incentives, xAI’s team said, are ‘not aligned with the rest of humanity’

Elon Musk has officially introduced his xAI team to the masses with a live Twitter Spaces event – after years of claiming the tech will be the demise of humanity.
The Twitter boss laid out his plans to make an artificial general intelligence (AGI) that will be ‘maximally curious and truth-seeking’ and ‘won’t be politically correct.’
‘People will be offended,’ Musk said. ‘Our AI can give answers that they might find controversial even though they might be true.’
But beyond the AI culture wars, Musk expressed ambitious hopes to produce an AGI with deep analytical reasoning capable of solving higher order math and science problems, including many that have eluded mankind’s best thinkers.
The billionaire suggested that xAI could answer questions about the nature of dark matter and dark energy: theorized but difficult to confirm components of the known universe which astrophysicists estimate constitute 95 percent of the cosmos.
Musk also said he hoped xAI could help resolve the ‘Fermi paradox’ — a theoretical question that asks why humans have not yet encountered extraterrestrial life in a universe that is over 13 billion years old and ripe with the conditions supporting life.
Elon Musk announced Wednesday a new AI company he calls xAI. The Twitter boss shared details in a Twitter Space today alongside xAI’s core team of engineers and former physcists
The Twitter boss laid out his plans to an assembled group of approximately 34,000 listeners on Twitter to make an artificial general intelligence (AGI) with xAI that will be ‘maximally curious and truth-seeking’ and ‘won’t be politically correct’
Musk has been one to criticize AI over the years, with his most notable attack on the tech in March when he and more than 1,000 other industry leaders called for a pause on AI – but Google and Microsoft boss stood on the sidelines
‘It would be great to know what the hell is really going on,’ Musk said.
‘That’s our goal.’
After some preamble, Musk opened the floor to his core team of all-male xAI scientists and engineers, including several poached from the new organization’s rivals like the Microsoft Azure-powered ChatGPT, which was made by OpenAI, and Google’s Bard AI.
Igor Babuschkin — a former employee of OpenAI with past particle physics research experience working on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN — told the Twitter Space that he shared Musk’s ambition to tackle big existential scientific questions at xAI.
The company wants to ‘really make a dent in our understanding of the universe,’ Babuschkin said.
But several of xAI’s other researchers, a group with includes ex-Microsoft researcher Greg Yang, former DeepMind and Google engineer Manuel Kroiss, and former DeepMind computer scientist Guodong Zhang, shifted focus to their AI competitors.
One member of Musk’s team said that ‘monopolization’ was currently the single biggest danger of AI projects in the private sector, adding that the the field’s ‘incentives’ are currently ‘not aligned with the rest of humanity.’
Musk, for his part, stressed the need for healthy competition and regulatory oversight, stating that government supervision of this kind was not ‘nirvana,’ but ‘better than nothing.’
Musk also told listeners that he had privately warned senior officials with the Chinese Communist Party that their nation, too, needed to regulate AI projects, or risk becoming ruled by a ‘digital super-intelligence.’
Unpredictable outcomes from such complicated undertakings, he suggested, may be the most likely.
‘Fate loves irony,’ Musk said.
A TIMELINE OF ELON MUSK’S COMMENTS ON AI
Musk has been a long-standing, and very vocal, condemner of AI technology and the precautions humans should take
Elon Musk is one of the most prominent names and faces in developing technologies.
The billionaire entrepreneur heads up SpaceX, Tesla and the Boring company.
But while he is on the forefront of creating AI technologies, he is also acutely aware of its dangers.
Here is a comprehensive timeline of all Musk’s premonitions, thoughts and warnings about AI, so far.
August 2014 – ‘We need to be super careful with AI. Potentially more dangerous than nukes.’
October 2014 – ‘I think we should be very careful about artificial intelligence. If I were to guess like what our biggest existential threat is, it’s probably that. So we need to be very careful with the artificial intelligence.’
October 2014 – ‘With artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon.’
June 2016 – ‘The benign situation with ultra-intelligent AI is that we would be so far below in intelligence we’d be like a pet, or a house cat.’
July 2017 – ‘I think AI is something that is risky at the civilisation level, not merely at the individual risk level, and that’s why it really demands a lot of safety research.’
July 2017 – ‘I have exposure to the very most cutting-edge AI and I think people should be really concerned about it.’
July 2017 – ‘I keep sounding the alarm bell but until people see robots going down the street killing people, they don’t know how to react because it seems so ethereal.’
August 2017 – ‘If you’re not concerned about AI safety, you should be. Vastly more risk than North Korea.’
November 2017 – ‘Maybe there’s a five to 10 percent chance of success [of making AI safe].’
March 2018 – ‘AI is much more dangerous than nukes. So why do we have no regulatory oversight?’
April 2018 – ‘[AI is] a very important subject. It’s going to affect our lives in ways we can’t even imagine right now.’
April 2018 – ‘[We could create] an immortal dictator from which we would never escape.’
November 2018 – ‘Maybe AI will make me follow it, laugh like a demon & say who’s the pet now.’
September 2019 – ‘If advanced AI (beyond basic bots) hasn’t been applied to manipulate social media, it won’t be long before it is.’
February 2020 – ‘At Tesla, using AI to solve self-driving isn’t just icing on the cake, it the cake.’
July 2020 – ‘We’re headed toward a situation where AI is vastly smarter than humans and I think that time frame is less than five years from now. But that doesn’t mean that everything goes to hell in five years. It just means that things get unstable or weird.’
April 2021: ‘A major part of real-world AI has to be solved to make unsupervised, generalized full self-driving work.’
February 2022: ‘We have to solve a huge part of AI just to make cars drive themselves.’
December 2022: ‘The danger of training AI to be woke – in other words, lie – is deadly.’
