The mystery surrounding a huge explosion that rattled windows across Coventry has deepened – after the Royal Air Force (RAF) said it was not responsible.
Residents from across the region reported hearing a loud bang on Saturday night (January 9) but were unable to work out what had caused it.
Hundreds said their homes and windows “were shaken” and young children “were woken up”.
Doorbell footage from Coventry homeowners Richard and Jo-Anne Barrick also emerged of the moment a ball of light ripped through the night sky.
Just seconds later, the sound echoed around the neighborhood.
Many similar sounds are often attributed to a fighter jet breaking through the sound barrier – known as a sonic boom.
But an RAF spokesperson has since told CoventryLive they are not behind it.
“Our operations team can confirm that there was no RAF fast Jet activity on Saturday thus, whatever was heard in your area it was not related to the RAF,” they said.
Among the theories for the mystery sound are weather phenomena or space debris passing overhead.
And people have been quick to share their experiences online.
“Yes, so loud, shook all the windows,” Philippa King said. “The rumbling went on for a while afterwards, sounded like an explosion – near Coundon wedge.”
Sonja Mahers added: “Yes, we heard it in Keresley off Watery Lane.”
Kimberly Jebson-Hambly commented: “Heard in CV6…noise reverberated into the walls of the house.”
And Ben Rose wrote: “Yes it rumbled a long time.”
