Mystery of ‘Dragon skull’ found in sand on British beach sparks Reddit frenzy

A strange skull that some believe looks like it belonged to a "dragon" has been found on a beach in the UK.

Images of the bizarre find were shared to Reddit page r/CasualUK, where the poster explained it was discovered on Bridlington Beach in Yorkshire.

They wrote: "Found some kind of animal skull in the sand while on Bridlington beach! Anyone know what this critter was?"

The skull appears to be straight out of Game of Thrones, with two pointed eyes at the top and an elongated snout at the bottom. There are even ridges where the mythical creature's eyes would be.

Other than a "dragon", some people in the comments section suggested it may belong to a "wyvern", a legendary winged serpent-like creature with two legs (unlike four-legged dragons).

"Dragon, those holes across the top are to vent the hot gases so it's head doesn't explode," one person said.

A second agreed: "Definitely some kind of dragon."

A third joked "I’m a palaeontologist, that’s undoubtedly a dragon", while a fourth added: "Yep, dragon. Can confirm, that's what they look like."

Unfortunately for all the self-proclaimed dragon experts on Reddit, someone else was on hand with a slightly more believable explanation.

"It's a gull pelvis," they wrote. They also shared a blog post from wildlife biologist Ellen Snyder's Spicebush Log, written in 2013 after she'd made a similar discovery.

The blog read: "I brought home a fragment of an animal skeleton from Seapoint Beach (Ireland). At first it looked like a baby dragon, but that's just too much George R.R. Martin on the brain.

"With much searching on the internet, I finally found a picture that matched my skeletal fragment.

"Thanks to Dr Karen Petersen in the Department of Biology at the University of Washington in Seattle for the pictures of comparative vertebrate anatomy.

"The skeletal fragment from Seapoint Beach matches the gull pelvis shown on the website linked above. The roundish end is the anterior end of the ilium, which in birds is fused with the other pelvic bones."
