Netflix introduces a 'Double Thumbs Up' button

Netflix introduces a ‘Double Thumbs Up’ button to let users flag when they really LOVE a show and improve personalised recommendations

  • The new button will let users flag the content they have really loved watching
  • This will help Netflix serve up more of the same via their recommendations
  • So if you gave Bridgerton the double thumbs up, you might see more shows or films starring the cast, or from Shondaland

When you haven’t just enjoyed a show, but it’s completely blown your mind, you want to tell your family and friends, you want to talk about it on social media, and you want more of it ASAP.

Now Netflix has introduced a Double Thumbs Up button, to let users flag the content they have really loved watching, so the platform can serve up more of the same via their personalised recommendations.

The new Double Thumbs Up button is essentially Netflix’s version of Tinder’s ‘Super Like’, which is used by users of the dating app to show a potential match they are really interested.

It will appear next to the existing Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons on TV, web, Android and iOS mobile devices, starting from today.

Netflix is constantly testing new features and tools to help users find shows and films they want to watch.

For example, in 2020 it introduced a Top 10 row, which highlights the most popular shows on Netflix in your country.

Then, in 2021, it launched the Play Something feature, which instantly plays a TV show or movie that you haven’t watched before.

Earlier this year, it also rolled out the ability to edit the ‘Continue Watching’ row on all devices.

Television will die with its audience, experts warn, as younger people switch to interactive forms of entertainment like the metaverse

Traditional broadcast television will die with its audience, experts have warned, saying young people prefer interactive forms of entertainment like the metaverse.

This is a loose collection of virtual worlds, gaming platforms and other forms of interactive media, including Minecraft, Roblox and Meta Platforms.

Frederic Cavazza, co-founder of Sysk, a French firm specialising in digital transformation, said young people have evolved from passive spectators of television, to active players in interactive mediums.

‘They’ve turned away from screens to smartphones,’ Cavazza explained, adding ‘TV channels are going to die with their audiences,’ unless networks adapt.
