New ice cream that ‘doesn’t melt’ goes on sale – but it’s not cheap

Customers are shunning an expensive new Chinese ice cream – after discovering it does not melt.

Videos posted online show people using lighters and even a blow torch to try and break down Chicecream.

None of the heat sources made any impression on the sweet treat which can withstand a naked flame or an hour in an 88F room.

That has prompted customers to demand to know what is in it.

One asked on social media: "What’s it made out of that it can be that sturdy?"

Another wrote: "I wonder if it will melt in your stomach."

"They’ve added flame-retardants to the ice cream – no wonder it costs that much," said one more.

Others demanded to know: "What us in there?"

Chicecream is marketing its new invention as an "authentically Chinese ice cream popsicle".

One stick costs £8.20.

The company said a seaweed-derived additive – carrageenan gum – allowed the ice cream to hold its shape.

"We believe that it is not scientific to judge the quality of ice cream by baking, drying or heating ice cream," it added.

"All the ice cream are produced according to national standards.

"The carrageenan gum helps the milk proteins maintain stability."

In 2019 the firm was fined £1,120 for false advertising over its ingredients.

China has a long history of food safety scandals including fake eggs that bounce like rubber balls, pork that glowed blue and tofu fermented with sewage.

There was even "gutter oil" – used cooking fat discarded by restaurants and resold to customers.

Authorities have pledged to boost oversight but companies have continued to cut corners.
