Pet shop owner gobsmacked as goldfish come back to life after being frozen solid

A petshop owner was left aghast after goldfish which had been frozen solid in a tank magically came back to life after the ice melted.

The anonymous shop owner from Hebei Province, China, had left the fish in her store before leaving for week's holiday during particularity freezing temperatures.

However, when she returned, the temperature had dropped even lower, leaving some of her fish completely frozen in blocks of ice.

Video footage shared online shows her trying to break the thick ice surrounding the fish, which are completely frozen solid and apparently dead.

However, she revealed that once the ice melted, the fish bizarrely came back to life.

The woman said she had accepted the fate of the fish before she turned the heating on, only to find them slowly showing signs of life as the shop warmed up.

After a day of warming back up, the fish were swimming around as if nothing had happened.

Although unusual, some fish and reptiles are able to survive being frozen as they have the ability to produce a special sugar which allows their metabolism to slow to almost zero.

Parts of China have recently been hit by a sudden and unexpected cold snap, catching many people, including the pet shop owner, off guard.

The story recalls a recent viral video in America of a man digging out a frozen alligator from a swamp.

The alligator was surviving being frozen using a technique known as "icing" in which the reptile continues breathing slightly while submerged in ice water and goes into a hibernation-like state.

Many people online commented in amazement at the animals' ability to shut itself down without food or water and then come back to life.

The man, called Tansu Yegen, tweeted: "Alligators survive in frozen swamps by sticking their noses through the ice to breathe. Reptiles shut down their metabolism, and they don't need to eat their heart rate slows down, their digestive system slows down, and they just sit and wait for the heat."
