Pizza Hut responds to angry customer over ‘sauce that sounds like swingers’ app’

A Pizza Hut diner who complained that the restaurant’s tomato ketchup bottles used "sexual" labels has received a response from the chain – but he remains unhappy and has now escalated the issue to his MP.

Adrian Shann lodged his grievance with Pizza Hut last month after visiting a branch in Hull, where he spotted the phrase "Shake, Squeeze and Squirt" on the bottle – wording that he insisted made it sound more suitable for a swingers' app than a pizza joint.

The 31-year-old fled the store following his £23 meal, "worried" for children who dined there and fired off a complaint to Pizza Hut, HullLive reports.

Speaking about his frustration, Adrian said: "The barbecue sauce one said 'Squeeze', but the ketchup one said 'Shake, Squeeze and Squirt'. It put me off using it.

"It literally sounds like an app for swingers. I do not understand how someone could put that sentence together, it's awful."

Adrian, who was visiting Pizza Hut for the first time, said there was a family eating at the restaurant at the same time as him.

"The adults had a laugh and then the children were asking their parents to tell them about it," he said.

"If I had my niece with me, I would be worried. It's definitely not appropriate."

Pizza Hut has now responded to his grumbling.

A representative for the chain said: "I can only apologise if you were caused any offence or upset on your recent visit to our Hut. Please know it is not our intention to make any of our guests feel uncomfortable.

"The wording on our ketchup is not meant to cause offence and sorry if this was interpreted this way.

"This has been the labelling of all ketchup bottles in our restaurants for some time now, and I can only apologise if this impacted the enjoyment of your meal."

But Adrian said he remained unhappy, and added: "I cannot imagine anyone looking at that sauce as tomato ketchup again.

"I felt like I was ripped off from the brothel because I never got a chance to squirt."

Adrian said he has now got in touch with his local MP, Emma Hardy, as he continues his one-man campaign to get the tomato ketchup label changed.
