The Government has placed a ban on the installation of gas boilers in newbuild homes from 2025, while for existing properties this is extended until 2035. As part of the UK’s target to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, ministers are considering making a requirement for all new domestic boilers from 2026 to be “hydrogen-ready” heating systems. But would you install a hydrogen-ready boiler in your home? Vote in our poll.

Under the £102million funding for the development of hydrogen and nuclear technologies, unveiled earlier this month, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy launched a consultation on the proposal for all new gas boilers from 2026 to be capable of being powered by hydrogen. This means they will initially burn gas but are easily modified by an engineer to operate on hydrogen, but there is no guarantee they will be converted.

Officials suggest the strategy will “give industry the confidence to prepare supply chains to ensure the benefits of the potential transition are maximised”. They will also be no more expensive than the boilers currently in use, making them a more affordable option than heat pumps.

Mike Foster, the head of the Energy and Utilities Alliance, said: “Mandating hydrogen-ready boilers is an important step towards decarbonising homes. The Government are absolutely right to support this no-regrets option.”

However, MPs on the Parliamentary Science and Technology Committee argue hydrogen will have a limited role in the future and is not a problem-free solution, highlighting practical and infrastructure challenges. Chair of the committee, Greg Clark said: “Hydrogen can play an important role in decarbonising the UK’s economy, but it is not a panacea.”
