Pubs, cats and a car park silent disco – City of Culture is hardly world’s worst

Hull is where the heart is, or at least someone should have told former Australian rugby league player Willie Mason that.

His rallying cry against the City of Culture 2018 which he cruelly dubbed the "worst place in the world", shows a flagrant lack of love for the city that brought us League of Gentleman alumni Reece Sheersmith, car park discos and Monopoly board staples.

Aquarium the Deep and shopping centre St Stephens both made appearances on the Hasbro board, and rightly so, it marks two of many wonderful spots in a beautiful city.

But as someone who bored their friends to tears with a two-year tunnel vision plan of desperately wanting to move to Hull, take it from me, it is far from the "worst place in the world".

Humberside locals rightly and proudly defended the city as a "brilliant place to live", and it sure feels like it.

From the handful of trips made to the gorgeous port city, it is clear that the people are friendly, the pubs are well-stocked and the car parks are easily converted.

There are even cats roaming around, domestic or otherwise, although more than likely the former.

Humber Street Sesh showed just how easy those conversions are proving once and for all that the best place to experience a silent disco is Fruit Market Multi Storey Car Park.

You only need one storey for sweet tunes and a brilliant time though. The Street Sesh marks a yearly staple celebrating the mass of culture the city has to offer, with last year's eventful experience topped by an excellent Low Hummer headlining set.

Unlike Willie's stint at Hull KR, the rest of the city is peppered with rich sporting achievements and has a golden telephone box to show for it.

Hull boxer Luke Campbell's achievements at the London 2012 Olympics netted the City of Culture a golden telephone box, planted in place by Kingston Communications.

The gloriously painted booth is fit for only the finest of calls to takeaways, taxi services and other late night services, and serves as a unique alternative to the fleet of golden letterboxes honouring our finest Olympians.

Of course that is not all for the lush harbour city, which boasts a stunning location to have a spot of breakfast at Thieving Harry's or for a coffee at the record store-turned café Wrecking Ball.

City of Culture indeed, Hull has plenty to offer, from the far reaches of karaoke bar Vox Box, where one friend had the gall to perform American Pie to incredible local pubs like The Hop Pole in Willerby.

The Hop Pole captures the city's local charm, overwhelming friendliness and lack of judgement (from patrons) as you load up LCD Soundsystem demos and Sophie Ellis-Bextor deep cuts into a jukebox.

It feels like a home away from home, but that may be because real life people are living in the city centre among Britain's high street holy grails of Greggs, Vue Cinema and a Waterstones.

There is no place like Hull, it is absolutely where the heart is, and the fine array of independent bars, brunch spots and bits of culture, from Ferens Art Gallery to the staggering Hull Minster make it such a treat to experience, and hopefully, live there.

It is far from the "worst city in the world", take yourself further north to Sunderland for that experience.
