Putin critic ‘50% burnt’ and almost dead after mysterious fire on New Year’s Eve

A Russian artist and critic of President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Russia has suffered horrific burns after a mysterious spark saw his New York apartment set ablaze on New Year's Eve.

Dmitry Krymov fled Russia at the start of the war in protest at the actions of Putin's army.

As a result, the 68-year-old who is also a theatre director was the subject of the Kremlin's state censorship, with all of his plays being cancelled in Moscow theatres.

And he has now been left with more than 50% of his body covered in horrific burns because of a fire – with his wife also in hospital, too.

According to Russian news outlet Moskovskij Komsomolets, Krymov had been premiering a new performance in the La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club off-Broadway.

But it was after the first show, which was sold out, that the night took a horrific turn and a fire broke out in his apartment.

The exact cause of the blaze has not yet been identified, but officials are claiming it was “either because of some kind of malfunction of the heating device, or because of a short circuit”.

The entire apartment has been burned out, and the escape of the pair has been called a “miracle”.

Kyrmov remains in a local hospital and may also be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, while his wife has been released.

The couple had been living in New York for the majority of the past year.

Since the invasion of Ukraine first began, several of Putin's biggest critics have died in mysterious circumstances ranging from falling off tall buildings, jumping out of windows or alleged suicides with no letters or reasoning behind them.

The Kremlin has never confirmed or denied any involvement in any of the many deaths – thought to be around 20 so far – of the critics.
