The SARMAT missile is believed to be one of the most powerful nuclear weapons in Russia’s arsenal, is said to be unstoppable, and able to carry a 7.5-ton warhead. Russian state TV hosts were previously seen laughing at the notion of one of the “Satan 2” missiles destroying the city of New York if used.

The Russian President said on Tuesday. “We will continue to develop and strengthen our armed forces, taking into account potential military threats and risks.”

He added that Russia’s newly tested SARMAT intercontinental ballistic missiles, capable of carrying 10 or more nuclear warheads and decoys, would be deployed for duty by the end of the year.

Putin added: “Successful testing of the Sarmat heavy intercontinental ballistic missile has been carried out.

“It is planned that the first such complex will be put on combat duty by the end of the year.

The news was announced by the Russian premier at a meeting with graduates from higher military educational facilities at the Kremlin.

The SARMAT RS-28 missile is a liquid-fueled rocket capable of operating at a range of 18,000km (11,000 miles), making it able to strike targets around the world.

Describing the missile, Putin said: “The SARMAT has the highest tactical and technical characteristics and is capable of overcoming all modern means of anti-missile defence.

“It has no analogues in the world and will not have for a long time to come.”

Putin also suggested the weapon would be used to deter any threats to Russia.

He said: “This truly unique weapon will strengthen the combat potential of our armed forces, reliably ensure Russia’s security from external threats and provide food for thought for those who, in the heat of frenzied aggressive rhetoric, try to threaten our country.”

The Sarmat is the successor to Russia’s Voyevoda ICBM, which is also known as the SS-18 “Satan” Mod-5, according to the defence intelligence site Janes.

Russia currently holds the world’s largest arsenal of nuclear weapons.

The high-speed capability of the missile is one of the main concerns to western states over the SATAN 2.

Experts suggest the missile could reach London or Paris within 210 seconds, and Finland in just 15 seconds.

On a wider scale, the missile is said to be able to reach New York in just 14 minutes once fired.

Using the polar regions as flight trajectories, the missile is able to circumnavigate long distances by shorter routes.

The missile, weighing in at 200 tonnes is capable of flying at over 16,000mph.

Following initial tests of the SATAN 2 missile, the US responded with tests of its own.

In May this year, a United States Airforce statement confirmed a hypersonic missile had been tested after being launched from a B-52 bomber off the coast of California.

A statement by the USAF read: “Following separation from the aircraft, the ARRW’s booster ignited and burned for the expected duration, achieving hypersonic speeds five times greater than the speed of sound.”

Both China and North Korea have also sought to develop similar weapons as the race to hypersonic superiority continues around world nuclear powers.
