A Royal Navy young officer has been mocked by his own ship after giving his "victim" a botched haircut.

HMS Protector took a merciless approach in savaging one of its own servicemen to its 15,000 Twitter followers on Wednesday evening.

In response to a snap shared of the budding barber's results, followers of the ice patrol ship have ripped into the trim further and reminisced over their own time spent at sea.

HMS Protector tweeted: "We’d been at sea for a while when an enterprising Young Officer started offering haircuts onboard using his clippers. Based on the victim below, the YO has now received firm direction to concentrate solely on his taskbook!"

The main Royal Navy Twitter account managed to bringing the poor lad's chopped up crown to even more people's social media timelines by liking it.

In an attempt to blend what appears to be a grade one back and sides into a longer length barnet on top, the wannabe barber got a bit too friendly with his pal's scalp.

One person jokingly gave the young officer the benefit of the doubt, given the circumstances of the pop-up salon.

They commented: "Must have hit a particularly robust wave just at that moment…."

A second quipped: "Wouldn't want a hair cut in a rough sea."

A former serviceman recalled: "I had a set of hair clippers on HMS Opportune, skipper got word, asked for a haircut before we went alongside somewhere foreign.

"He said this probably the most important haircut you will ever do. I survived, he survived and I made a fiver, everyone else was charged a can of beer!"

Another remembered: "There was always one of the lads who could cut hair on board! I have to say they made good money from the lads but they were pretty good at cutting hair! Not like this!"
