Schoolboy sent home from school for iconic throwback World Cup Ronaldo haircut

A school has been slammed for sending a student home after he turned up with a haircut inspired by World Cup hero Ronaldo – but not the one you think.

Alfie Ransom, 12, was told off by officials at Sirius West Academy in Hull for donning he iconic – and comical – hairstyle worn by Brazilian legend Ronaldo at the 2002 World Cup.

The haircut featured a semi-circle at the front of his head, but the young boy's teachers didn't approve of it and called it a “breach of school rules”.

Speaking to Hull Live, mum Emma, 32, said: “Nowadays, schools are all about accepting people for who they are and encouraging people to be unique and themselves. How is this any different?

“Ronaldo is one of my son's favourite players and it's the World Cup.

“Even since I was a kid, there were always trends according to what pop stars and celebrities were doing – we would go crazy for the stars.

“Alfie's friends loved the haircut and it made Alfie really happy and confident. He likes school and wanted to go as normal but he won't be allowed to go back until he's shaved it all off, which is ridiculous because it won't affect his learning one bit.”

Emma is loathed to have to shave her son's head entirely, as this would made the youngster “sad,” she claimed.

But she does realise that it's “important” for him to return to school, which he can not do until the haircut issue is solved.

She said: “He's confident with how he looks now and I don't want to force him to have his head shaved.

“However, it is important for him to be in school and if they won't let him back until it's shaved, I don't know what to do.”

Sirius West Academy's uniform policy states: "Hairstyles must be appropriate for Academy life. There should be no extreme hairstyles such as a Mohican, shaved ‘tram’ lines or unnatural hair colour.”

The Daily Star has contacted Sirius West Academy for comment.

The infamous haircut was actually done for “tactical” reasons, Ronaldo previously claimed.

Brazil went on to win the 2002 World Cup with Ronaldo clinching the golden boot with eight goals, including two in the final.

Speaking at head of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he said: “I had an injury in my leg and everybody was talking about that.

“I decided to cut my hair and leave the small thing there. I come to training and everybody saw me with bad hair.

“Everybody was talking about the hair and forgot about the injury.

“I could stay more calm and relaxed and focused on my training.

“I'm not proud about the hair itself because it was pretty strange. But it was a good way to change the subject.”
