The Scottish First Minister received the Ray of the Day award from the Climate Action Network International for “walking the talk” on global warming. It came after she committed £2million to help vulnerable communities fight the climate crisis. This is a separate front o the £100billion pledge by world leaders earlier in the week and doubles from the £1million announcement on Monday.

Ms Sturgeon said: She said: “There are many things that Glasgow has to achieve and I hope we will see them achieved over the next 48 hours or so but one relatively straightforward thing, that should be achieved and there is no excuse for not achieving, is meeting that $100billion commitment.

“It was made 12 years ago, it will be shameful if we come out of this COP without that commitment being met.”

After delegates erupted into applause, the First Minister (pictured) added: “For rich countries that should be relatively easy to do, so to world leaders I’d say please don’t miss that opportunity.”

Director of the International Centre for Climate Change Professor Saleemul Huq heaped praise on the leader of the SNP and shamed other world leaders.

He said: “The true leader that has emerged here at COP26 is not not party to the convention.

“She is our host. She is the First Minister of Scotland.

“Just before COP started she put a million pounds of Scottish money on the table for a new fund on loss and damage and challenged the other leaders to match it.

“Now she has doubled it. She is the true leader who is putting money on the table.

“The US is giving us $0, the EU is giving us $0, but Scotland has given us £2million.”

It comes after Ms Sturgeon has appeared to use the conference to further her dream of Scottish independence, a move that sparked some to call for her to resign.

It comes as adverts at the COP26 that were paid for by the SNP and aimed at world leaders visiting Glasgow called Scotland “a nation in waiting”.

While Ms Sturgeon has claimed that the ads were simply “welcoming people to Scotland”, there have been calls from opposition parties to immediately remove them.

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton hit out at the First Minister for only agreeing on a power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens to pursue Scottish independence, and claims she has completely disregarded the environment.

He said: “No wonder Nicola Sturgeon is under pressure over her propaganda push.

“The focus of COP26 should be on saving the planet, so it’s disappointing to see the First Minister exploiting Scotland’s place on the global stage to push her divisive agenda.”

Those claims were also echoed by Liberal Democrat’s leader Ed Davey, who said: “The Greens talk a good game about our keeping our environment clean and saving the planet but in reality, all they want to do is split up our family of nations.

“Their government has just missed its crucial climate targets again, these so-called Greens have a laser focus on nationalism.

“No political party should be using COP to advance their own nationalist agenda.”
