Snow and ice warnings are in effect for parts of Scotland and England as weather forecasters expect disruptions between now and Saturday. The Met Office has warned of snow showers and icy patches across the northeast and east of Scotland at least until 12pm tomorrow. Forecasters expect night showers on Thursday, mostly confined to Scotland, with accumulations of one to three centimetres across parts of Shetland and Orkney.

Heavier accumulations of five to eight centimetres are possible in hilly and mountainous areas in east Scotland.

The Met Office warning comes in the aftermath of Storm Darcy, which sparked chaos across the UK.

The weather forecaster said: “Icy stretches are possible by night where surfaces are left wet from the partial melt of lying snow during the daytime.”

The Met Office confirmed today Wednesday was the coldest February night on record since February 23, 1995.

Temperatures in Braemar, Aberdeenshire, fell to a freezing -23C at 8.13am today, making it colder than the infamous winter of 1962 and 1963 – the coldest winter in more than 200 years.

Satellite images complied by NASA’s Worldview Service now reveal the extent of the snow that has covered Scotland in recent days.

And it looks as though more snow could be on its way this weekend.

The NASA images show a near-uniform blanket of snow stretching from Orkney all the way down into England.

Only parts of the Hebrides and Scotland’s western coast appear to have been spared most of the snow.

Scott Duncan, a Scottish meteorologist shared the NASA images to his Twitter profile.

He tweeted: “The detail of the rugged Highlands and Islands is beautifully captured in the west.

“Eastern areas are under a thick blanket of powder snow with further beefy showers moving in from the North Sea.”

In another tweet, he said: “Snow managed to make its way all the way through the Central Belt while Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire basked in crisp winter sun.”

Many people doted over the satellite pictures with one Twitter user pledging to visit Scotland from Texas after the pandemic is over.

Another person said: “That is some serious snow y’all have happening. Amazing shot from space.”

And a third person said: “Amazing picture of this winter wonderland in Scotland.”

NASA’s Worldview is an interactive, browser-based tool updated on a daily basis with full-resolution satellite imagery.

The US space agency said: “NASA’s constellation of Earth-observing satellites constantly collect data about Earth and acquire some pretty amazing images of our planet.

“The NASA Worldview imagery mapping and visualization application lets you interactively explore this tremendous trove of NASA Earth science data and imagery—and even create snapshots and animated GIFs to share with friends.

“This Earth Day imagery gallery provides tips for exploring the Worldview gallery images, resources to show you how NASA studies Earth, and links to activities to help you learn more about how our amazing planet works.”
