Sony has revealed the name of its next-generation virtual reality (VR) headset for its PlayStation 5 console at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) – even as the gaming giant continues to shield what the highly-anticipated system will look like.

Called PlayStation VR2, the company had previously announced the system’s development, but this is the first time the public has heard its official name.

The VR headset will feature an OLED display, use integrated cameras to track players and offer feedback via a built-in headset motor and the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller.

Sony seems to be giving gamers a trail of breadcrumbs when it comes to its PlayStation VR2 – giving away limited details a little at a time.

It is not clear when the world will first feast its eyes on the system, but for now at least consumers know what it is called.

‘Building upon our innovations from PS5, PlayStation VR2 adds a true next-gen experience with high-fidelity visuals, new sensory features, and enhanced tracking – along with a simplified single-cord setup,’ Sony shared in the announcement.

The VR headset offers 4K HDR, 110-degree field of view and foveated rendering, along with headset-based controller tracking.

PS VR2 tracks players and the controller through integrated cameras embedded in the VR headset.

The movements and direction that players look at are reflected in-game without the need for an external camera.

The headset will also boast Sony’s new Sense Technology that combines eye tracking, headset feedback, 3D Audio, and the innovative PS VR2 Sense controller to ‘create an incredibly deep feeling of immersion,’ according to the company.

The Sense Controllers, which were announced last March, are compete with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers that, according to Sony, ‘enable players to feel and interact with games in a much more visceral way.’

Along with the VR headset, attendees of the CES event also got a sneak peak of the Horizon Call of the Mountain videogame from Guerrilla and Firesprite, which will launch February 18.

Sony also unveiled its new concept SUV called Vision-S 02 during the event.

This is a new version of the firm’s first prototype battery-powered car that it has already been road testing.

The seven-seat sport-utility vehicle measures in at around 15 feet long, which is fractionally longer than the Tesla Model Y SUV, and sits higher from the ground.

Despite looking different, Sony bosses said the ’02’ uses the same electric platform as the Vision-S saloon that has been tested on roads since December 2020.

That means power will likely be generated by a pair of 200kW motors – one at the front axle and one at the rear – producing a combined output of 536bhp from a four-wheel-drive system.

No further information about battery sizes and range capabilities have yet been released.

In terms of the Vision-S 02 SUV’s performance capabilities, Sony said it will have a top speed of ‘more than 112mph.’
