An ambitious project of drilling the "deepest hole in the world" has led to claims that the "sounds of hell" have been heard.
In the 1970s, the Soviets launched a project known as the "Kola Superdeep Borehole" in Murmansk near the border with Finland.
Scientists and geologists started the drilling on May 24, 1970 and reached 12,200 metres (49,000ft) down towards the Earth's crust.

And one audio clip left people haunted as people referred it to sounds of "people burning in hell".
The 17-second voice memo was alleged to be recorded by a team of scientists who wrapped several heat-resistant microphones and lowered it into the hole.
Listen to the clip below and hear what could be the "sounds from hell".
The wailing sound left many thinking that something supernatural happened during the digging of the deepest artificial point on Earth.
But it wasn't exactly true – instead, scientists found interesting facts about the geology of the Earth.
The deep rocks found were saturated with water, valuable minterals like gold and copper, as well as 14 species of fossilised micro-organisms.
Later, a myth-busting website analysed the viral audio and concluded that the sound was looped and edited.
One YouTube clip pulled up audio from the radio broadcast "Quiet Please – The Fourable Board" and soundbites from 1972 horror movie "Baron Blood" to compare them with the "sounds from hell".
"The file has been looped and layered over itself several times to make the 20 or 30 voices from Baron Blood sound like a few hundred…so the conclusion here is while hell might be real, this story is not true," he said.
The Kola Superdeep Borehold drilling stopped in 1992 when the temperature reached 180C as by that time, the collapse of the Soviet Union left the scientists no money to fund such project.
The desolate site has now become a destination for adventurous tourists.
