Space boffins ask for public’s help to decode ‘alien’ message beamed to Earth

Top space boffins are turning to the general public for help in order to prepare for any alien message being beamed to Earth from out of space.

The invitation has come from the SETI Institute, which specialises in studying contact from aliens.

They have launched a projected called A Sign in Space, alongside media artist Daniela de Paulis, the European Space Agency, the Green Bank Observatory and the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics.

Together, they have been transmitting a “simulated extraterrestrial message” from an spacecraft out in the universe.

And they want the public to decode it for them.

A spokesman said: “The objective of the project is to involve the world-wide Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence community, professionals from different fields and the broader public, in the reception, decoding and interpretation of the message.

“This process will require global cooperation, bridging a conversation around the topics of SETI, space research and society, across multiple cultures and fields of expertise.

“This open call is for everyone – the public as well as specialists and experts from all fields – to collaborate in decoding the extraterrestrial message.

“Deciphering an extraterrestrial signal and its message would begin an endless and varied process of technological and cultural interpretation that would highlight our limitations, as well as our fundamental need to transcend them.”

The message can be downloaded from a special website created for the project – but it's not an easy job.

The files have been uploaded to a Filecoin website, and even then the files are in .sigmf-data and .sigmf-meta format.

One decoded, you then fill out a Google Form, with your decoded message included in it.

The spokesman added: “Throughout history, humanity has searched for meaning in powerful and transformative phenomena.

“Receiving a message from an extraterrestrial civilization would be a profoundly transformational experience for all humankind.

“A Sign in Space offers the unprecedented opportunity to tangibly rehearse and prepare for this scenario through global collaboration, fostering an open-ended search for meaning across all cultures and disciplines.”
