SpaceX will attempt to launch the rocket that could one day fly humans to Mars after scrubbing its initial liftoff attempt on Friday. The 164ft-tall spacecraft was rolled out onto the Boca Chica launch pad earlier this month, just days after the explosive test flight of the previous iteration, SN10. SpaceX fans are now desperate to see the SN11 nail the test flight and stick the landing in one piece.

SN11 or Serial Number 11 is only the fourth Starship prototype to launch on a suborbital flight.

SpaceX chief Elon Musk wants Starship to reach orbit before the year is over, with operational flights by 2023.

The three previous prototypes – SN8, SN9 and SN10 – were all blown to smithereens during their first test flights.

SN10 was the only model that came close to acing the test but the rocket was damaged during the landing sequence and blew up just eight minutes after touchdown.

SpaceX fans are now keeping their fingers crossed SN11 earns its wings today.

One person tweeted: “Okay guys I’m 99.9999999 percent sure SN11 will land tomorrow if it launches.

“IM SERIOUS! If we can do it once we can do it again but even better!”

Another person said: “I can say that the success of this launch is very important, SN10 landed despite the explosions hence there is an even bigger need for SN11 to land, nothing must be left unchecked.

“SpaceX cannot afford any more failures. You can imagine the backlash if the crash this one.”

What time will Starship SN11 launch today?

After SN11’s test flight was scrubbed on Friday for “additional checkouts”, Monday, March 29, is the earliest the rocket could fly.

Mr Musk announced on Twitter: “Standing down SN11 until probably Monday.

“Additional checkouts are needed. Doing our best to land and fully recover.”

He later tweeted on Sunday: “Possible Starship flight tomorrow afternoon.”

Road closures have been scheduled around Boca Chica today from 6pm to 11pm BST (12pm to 5pm CDT).

Cameron County Judge Eddite Trevino Jr said: “I have ordered the closure of Boca Chica Beach and Highway 4 for the purpose of protecting Public Health and Safety during SpaceX flight activities on March, 29, 2021, in the time period between 12pm CST to 5pm CST of the same day.”

Backup closures have not been scheduled so if the rocket launches today, it will be in this time window.

Michael Baylor of NASASpaceFlight.com tweeted: “SpaceX is targeting between 12pm and 5pm Central on Monday for Starship SN11’s flight test, per road closures.”

The US Federal Aviation Administration has also issued temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) for the airspace around Boca Chica.

The TFRs are in effect on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The restrictions cite “space operations” up to an “unlimited” altitude from 1pm to 2am BST.
