Stunned fishermen catch huge shark after it was ‘half-eaten by bigger predator’

Two fishermen were left stunned after finding a huge shark left half-eaten by an even bigger 'monster of the deep'.

YouTuber Sammy Hitzke and his pal Shaun Whale spent nearly five hours struggling to reel in a catch.

Footage shows the two men being pleased with themselves as they initially believed they had found a large fish during a trip off the coast of Queensland, Australia.

However, as the body nears the surface of the water, Sammy realised they could have bitten off more than they can chew as he told Shaun "it could be a shark".

But the pair were astonished when it hits them they were dealing with a chewed-up body as the shark only had its vertebrae connecting the front half of its body, with another hook in its mouth.

It became apparent that the shark had been attacked by a larger predator in the depths of the ocean.

Sammy said: "It looks like it’s been sharked. Shark’s been sharked. This is epic, this is proper epic. He’s got three-quarters of himself missing."

The more experienced of the two fishermen, Shaun described the experience as the "find of a lifetime".

He said: "I’m absolutely exhausted but this might be the craziest thing I’ve ever seen in the ocean.

"I’ve done a lot of fishing, spent a lot of time out on the big blue, and not once did I think I’d find a thresher shark eaten by something that, I imagine, was absolutely massive.

"This is a true predator of the depths – now he’s just food for another shark."

The pair shared the experience on YouTube, with a video of the incident named ‘There’s always a BIGGER FISH! Deep water fishing gets crazy!’

The video has since been viewed more than 170,000 times since it was posted last week.

Some commenters shared their theories as to what happened to the sea beast.

One user claimed: "The shark appears to have been attacked by a giant squid. The damage doesn't look like it was done by another shark."

Another person said: "Looks like a strategic bite, possibly an orca going for the organs, that’s the only thing I can think of that would purposely go for the midsection of that shark."

A third added: "You’ve been done by a giant squid there I reckon Sammy! Stripped it to the backbone like a squid but hasn’t bitten through as a shark would.

"Eaten the flesh along the backbone and left the rest plus there are no teeth mark scratches!"
