Tenants ‘should be told if their council houses are haunted’, says expert

Tenants should be told if their council houses are haunted, an expert argues.

Tax lawyer and ghost hunter Alan Murdie said: “I hear from tenants, licensees and people who think they have hauntings.

“Councils don’t listen or can’t comprehend. It may or may not be something paranormal, but they should take it seriously.”

Freedom of Information requests to councils in the capital close to where Alan’s Ghost Club is based in Kensington, west London, found just two reports were recorded in five years.

Alan added: “When people are genuine about these reports, it’s usually a sign of social stress. The problems that we now see in housing and homelessness are the worst ones I’ve seen for 30 years.

“So if some of this is leading to an increase in reports of ghost phenomena I am not surprised.”

Alan says ghost “sightings” may indicate structural problems in housing, extreme climatic conditions or someone’s medication being too strong.

The Local Government Association has declined to comment.

In his day job Mr Murdie specialises in council tax appeals, and his been the editor of the 'Council Tax Handbook' since 1998.

He also worked with the Ministry of Justice and Welfare Bill Committees in Parliament on law reforms back in the 2000s.

But in his spare time he also lives a 'second life' as a veteran ghost hunter, and is even the chairman of the Ghost Club of Great Britain.

Past members of the spooky society include such distinguished figures as Charles Dickens and the First War poet Siegfried Sassoon

Alan has also penned books on haunted locations across the UK.

Back in 2014 he told the Express.co.uk that the ghost of a "slain monk" appears on the grounds of Buckingham Palace every year on Christmas Day — and that this may be the reason the royals "prefer to spend the festive season at Sandringham.”
