Top 10 UK places most likely to survive Walking Dead-style ‘zombie apocalypse’

If there is ever a Walking Dead-style apocalypse it seems those living in leafy Cambridge have the least to fear.

The university city topped a list of places most likely to survive a zombie invasion, due to its number of onshore wind farms, recycling centres and farmland, while Swansea was second.

The research found Belfast in Northern Ireland was the third top area expected to survive because of its green space.

But Oxford, Preston and Derby were bottom of the list due to its lack of onshore wind farms, outdoor space, and clean air.

Comparison website SaveOnEnergy, which carried out the study, said: “Whilst much of the population believe that a zombie apocalypse is little more than a fictitious scenario, a number of Brits still fear the possibility, with pop culture leading some to believe that a zombie takeover remains a reasonable explanation of how the world might end.

“If in the middle of a zombie apocalypse with access to no food or supplies, farms would be the go-to location to grow crops and be self-sufficient.

“After analysing land data to find out how much of each city’s region is covered by farmland, we can reveal that Leicester, Nottingham, and Northampton came out on top with 100 points each in our index.

“Following closely behind in second are the Northern Irish cities of Newry, Armagh City, and Belfast. Meanwhile, for obvious reasons, the City of London was awarded zero points due to having just 9% of farmland.”

The zombie survival index was based on solar energy produced per year, farming area, the number of farmers per city and air quality.

Researchers also probed outdoor space, recycling centres, wind farms and the number of electric vehicle charging points.

It comes after research found that zombie horror film fans are better prepared for the coronavirus pandemic than other people.

University researchers said movies such as 28 Days Later and Night of the Living Dead serve as “mental rehearsal” for actual events.
