Tourists baffled as Piccadilly Circus isn’t full of tight-rope walkers and lions

Tourists have been baffled because Piccadilly Circus is not an actual circus.

They have moaned on TripAdvisor about the lack of trapezes, clowns and performing elephants.

One wrote: “Not a circus. Didn’t see one juggler or clown – stood looking up for a trapeze artist but no joy.”

A Canadian visitor said the central London site, famous for its statue of Eros and the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, is “not really an attraction” despite having “a very enjoy-able day exploring the area”.

Another said the site was a “big flop” not a “big top”.

The visitor added: “All in all, myself and my family were left a little deflated.

After spending £40 in petrol we couldn’t wait to see what the circus had to offer… or didn’t.

“The tightrope walker never turned up, there were no lions and we struggled to make out the juggler. Don’t fall for the trip. It’s a road junction.”

Piccadilly Circus was built in 1819, and has since become one of, if not the busiest place in London.

Its giant iconic screens became one of the most sobering images of the pandemic when a message from Her Majesty The Queen was played on them – and around the country on television – in a bid to boost the morale of a nation.

In the, the-late Royal said: “Together we are tackling this disease, and I want to reassure you that if we remain united and resolute, then we will overcome it.

“I hope in the years to come everyone will be able to take pride in how they responded to this challenge, and those who come after us will say the Britons of this generation were as strong as any, that the attributes of self-discipline, of quiet, good-humoured resolve, and of fellow feeling still characterise this country.

“The pride in who we are is not a part of our past, it defines our present and our future.

“We should take comfort that while we may have more still to endure, better days will return.

“We will be with our friends again. We will be with our families again. We will meet again.”
