Tragedy as restaurant sign crushes car killing pensioner and injuring two others

A 72-year-old woman has died and two others have been injured after a restaurant sign fell on their car crushing it "on the way back from hospital".

It is believed that strong winds caused the massive sign of Denny's restaurant to come down and onto the car in the car park in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

Photographs of the aftermath of the accident shows the gargantuan yellow sign propped up by the front of the blue vehicle, which is crumpled underneath it.

Elizabethtown Police spokesman Chris Denham said he had "never seen anything like this".

“It’s certainly very windy out here and I’m certain that did have a factor and was involved in this," he told the media.

Witnesses confirmed that the sign was brought down by the high winds.

The Elizabethtown Fire Department and Hardin County EMS pulled the occupants from the car and the 72-year-old was rushed to University Hospital in Louisville where she later died, WAVE News confirmed.

She has yet to be identified formally but a fundraiser that appeared online states that the woman is Lillian Mae Curtis.

The woman who started the fundraiser, Amy Nichols, stated that Mrs Curtis is her grandmother.

She said that Mrs Curtis was on the way back from collecting her husband from hospital, as he had heart surgery three days ago.

"I am asking for help for the memorial service and to get me to KY to be with my family cause I live over 2000 miles away," Los Angeles-based Ms Nihols said.

She added: "My nanny was loved by so many people and this loss has left a hole inside us all."

An adult man and a woman, who were also in the car, were taken to Baptist Health Hardin and the extent of their injuries remains unknown.
