Thousands have reported being unable to use Twitter this afternoon (Saturday, July 1) after Elon Musk rolled out a bizarre new temporary feature.

Users of the social network complained they were unable to load tweets, with many claiming they were only able to see posts from Friday night, as they were told they had exceeded their "rate limit" or the site "couldn't retrieve tweets".

"That's what I get for scrolling a couple of trendings… #TwitterDown," one unsatisfied user wrote, alongside a screenshot taken of the app that read: "Sorry, you are rate limited. Please wait a few moments then try again."

Now Twitter fans have learned the malfunction might not actually be due to a bug, but a strange temporary feature rolled out by Musk.

The Tesla tycoon, who infamously took over the platform in October 2022, said the number of posts different types of accounts could see had been limited in response to "extreme levels of data scraping".

Taking to Twitter, he said: "To address extreme levels of data scraping & system manipulation, we’ve applied the following temporary limits: Verified accounts are limited to reading 6000 posts/day; Unverified accounts to 600 posts/day; New unverified accounts to 300/day."

It is unclear how long the strange new limits will be in place or whether some kind of permanent cap would be put in place in the future.

When the Daily Star contacted Twitter's press office for more information, we received an automated reply containing only a poo emoji.

The website DownDetector, which reports when websites and apps are not working, received thousands of complaints about the app, peaking at a whopping 5,206 shortly after 4pm today.

This is not the first time Musk has come under fire since taking over the platform – the billionaire was previously slammed for firing swathes of employees.

One user remarked: "It has everything to do with him, he’s the one who got rid of all the staff. I’ve been on Twitter since 2009 and there have been more issues since he took over than all the years before combined."

"Can’t see anything on timeline or on my profile. Just the words 'you have exceeded the Twitter rate'. Elon you better sort this out before I come there!! This issue has been happening since 2pm," another angry social networker added.

Musk also oversaw the rollout of the controversial Twitter Blue feature, which requires users to pay for a blue tick – previously used to mark official noteworthy accounts – and unlock premium features.
