One of the UK's most dangerous prisoners who lives 23 hours a day in an underground glass box has set the world record for the most days spent in solitary confinement.
Serial killer Robert Maudsley, known as ‘Hannibal the Cannibal’, has spent more than 16,400 consecutive days in isolation for his sickening crimes – with guards even refusing to ever be alone with him.
The 68-year-old was serving a life sentence for double murder when he killed two fellow inmates at Wakefield jail on July 28, 1978.

He told a guard: “There’ll be two short on the roll call.”
Since that day, he has spent nearly 45 years of his sentence in solitary confinement, as reports The Mirror.
Prison officials were forced to build Maudsley his own custom cell after prison staff – including barbers – refused to be alone with him.
He has been kept in an 18-foot by 15-foot cell encased with bulletproof windows and a steel door.
The door opens into a small caged area in thick perspex. There is a small slot where food is passed through.
Inside the cell is a chair made from compressed cardboard, a lavatory, a sink and a concrete slab for a bed.
It is said to bear an uncanny likeness to the cell of cannibal killer Hannibal Lecter, played by Anthony Hopkins in the 1991 film Silence of the Lambs.
Mawdsley acquired the nickname after claims he dug a spoon into the brain of one of his victims, an allegation he always denied.

Maudsley previously appealed to be allowed to spend the rest of his prison days with the “general population” – but chiefs ruled him too dangerous.
They declared he would be forced to spend the rest of his life, 23 hours a day, locked alone inside a glass box beneath the jail – which he once described as “like being buried alive in a coffin”.
Mawdsley’s nephew Gavin Mawdsley, from Liverpool, told Channel 5’s Evil Behind Bars that his uncle had accepted his fate. Gavin said: “He’s asking to be on his own because he knows what can happen.
“Put him on a wing surrounded by rapists and paedophiles – I know this because he told us – he was going to kill as many paedophiles as he could.
“I’m not condoning what he did. He did very bad things. But he didn’t kill a child or woman. An innocent person didn’t go to work that day and never return home. The people he killed were really bad people.”
