Wife of man who died ‘worst possible death’ in cave still trolled 13 years later

The wife of a man who died the ‘worst possible death’ is now remarried with two more children – but still faces abuse from hideous trolls online over the horrific incident.

John Edward Jones lost his life in 2009 after he became stuck in an underground cave known as Nutty Putty, near Salt Lake City, Utah, USA.

Emily Jones Sanchez has tied the knot to Donovan Sanchez since the death of John, but despite it being more than a decade after her first husband's passing people still abuse her online.

John, a medical student and experienced explorer got trapped in the tunnel upside down, eventually passing away after 27 hours upsidedown from cardiac arrest.

His remains are still in the cave, which has been sealed off as his final resting place.

Emily has now started a new chapter in her life, giving an interview in 2016 to Deseret News as she lived in Illinois about life after loss.

She now has four children – two with John and two with her second husband Donovan. In the past she has posted pictures of them on Facebook.

In one post in 2020, she talked about writing a review – but in just the last nine weeks, in the summer of 2022, she has been on the receiving end of some bizarre abuse.

One twisted comment reads: “JOHN WAS BETTER ! RIP JOHN IF I WAS YOUR WIFE I WOULD HAVE NEVER MOVED ON SOO SOON AND WOULD BE SHARING YOUR STORY AND LIFE. AND POSTING ABOUT YOU”.

Another sick comment said: “Yea 'awww' to her remarrying only 3 years after her husband's tragic death. She didn’t love him”.

Others have insensitively posted comments on the post, brutally discussing John well in view of her.

“Is that John on ur profile picture? Or is it another man I’m genuinely confused I swear John passed away,” a user said.

“100% agree with what you said. She has no shame she never loved him,” another wrote.

Another said: “Her husband died the worst way imaginable and she married 3 years later but probably dated him way sooner . So sad”.

Commenting on an earlier post, a user laid out an unsolicited opinion: "Just wondering, when you die and go to heaven, who will you be with? It breaks my heart how easily people focus on happiness in this earthly life instead of holding on and wait to be re-united."

In her interview with Deseret News, she said: “It’s never been hard to talk about John,” she said. “It’s never been hard to remember John.

“Ever since the very beginning, ever since I first met Donovan, he’s been really comfortable with John continuing to be a part of our family and our lives, especially because of our kids.

"He just knows that the kids need to remember their dad so he’s good about wanting to stay in touch with the Joneses and he loves the Joneses.”
