Woman claims ‘rule of thumb’ guide can help you survive in nuclear explosion

A woman has claimed people can find out if they're safe following a nuclear explosion by sticking their thumbs out.

The questionable self-help guide was said to give you an idea of a "safe range" whether or not you will be affected the bomb.

Felecia explained on TikTok: "Here's what you do if you ever observe a nuclear explosion.

"After the bomb has been detonated, it will form what is known as a mushroom cloud and the size of this mushroom cloud is what you will use to determine whether or not you are safe from where you're standing.

"This is called the rule of thumb for nuclear explosions.

"Let's say you observe the explosion out of your window – what you're supposed to do is take your thumb and hold it over the mushroom cloud.

"If your thumb completely covers the mushroom cloud, then you are safe.

"But if not, run for your life."

Viewers doubted the guide would be useful in such scenario as many said they would run for shelter and hope for the best.

"Why even bother? Just run for your life in any case," one said.

A second commented: "That's cute, I love that you are all trying to survive a nuclear blast, I'm just gonna lay down because whatever happens, happens."

"I'm not sure any observation could be made at all since I would be blind from the flash," a third added and a fourth found it ridiculous to believe.

She added: "The real question is who was putting their thumbs up during a nuclear explosion to figure it out?"

Felecia further explained in the comments: "If your thumb completely covers the mushroom cloud, the idea is that you are likely to be safe from radiation."

The rule of thumb theory is beleived to be originated from Fallout video game series where the mascot "Vault Boy" put his thumb and squinted at the mushroom cloud.

Should a nuclear bomb happen in the future, here's a useful estate agent map of safest places outside potential blast zones.
