YouTube is getting a MAKEOVER to make it easier to like and comment

YouTube is getting a MAKEOVER! App is rolling out a new interface for its full-screen player – making it easier to like, dislike and comment on videos

  • The current YouTube full screen player just shows partial previews of videos
  • These are being replaced with a series of buttons, including for like and dislike
  • This will make interaction with the video easier, without leaving full screen mode
  • It is available with the app for iPhone and Android, and began roll out on Monday

The full screen YouTube player on iPhone and Android is getting a makeover, according to reports, making it easier to like, dislike and comment on a video.

The new interface is being rolled out gradually, with some users already reporting having access to the slimmed down layout, making buttons more accessible.

In the new layout, YouTube has replaced partially visible previews of other videos, with buttons to like, dislike, comment, share and add to playlist, The Verge reported.

This change is only visible when watching a video in full screen mode within the app, rather than viewing from a browser, and hasn’t been rolled out to all users yet.

The current player has the title across the top, alongside buttons to cast and add closed captions. At the bottom there is the slider to show the position in the video, as well as partial views of other clips that might be of interest.

In the new interface, the top bar is the same, but instead of partial views of other videos, there are thumbs up and thumbs down, comment, add to playlist and share buttons, as well as an option to view other videos.

These options were all available under the old interface, but users had to swipe up first, then they appeared under the other videos selection.

As part of their redesign, which appears to have been made to make it easier for users to interact with the video, rather than just watch it, comments are more visible.

Clicking on the comment button while in landscape mode will open a side bar with the latest comments over the right of the video you are watching.

Previously, to view comments while watching a video, you had to enter portrait mode, tap on the comments section to open it up, then switch to full screen mode.

YouTube is also making it easier to view information on the video, without having to leave full screen mode – hiding it under the title across the top bar.

By pushing the chevron next to the title of a video will bring up the description, number of likes, views and date it would posted over the top of the video.

The first users were given access to the new interface on Monday, January 31, but it has yet to reach all users.

Some people have taken to Twitter to comment on having access to the new design.

Ishan Agarwal wrote: ‘YouTube has a new Video Player UI on mobile devices now (being rolled out on both Android & iOS devices), with direct access to buttons like Like/Dislike, Sharing, and Comments.’

There are also reports of new animations when clicking the like button, with fireworks appearing around the thumbs up, and a number below it.

No number will appear below the dislike button, as Google have hidden that from view in a bid to keep small creators from being targeted by dislike attacks or harassment.

The firm said it also wanted to promote ‘respectful interactions between viewers and creators’, by focusing on positive views and likes.

People will still be able to click dislike, and the creator will get a dislike number, but users won’t be able to see how often a video has been disliked, YouTube confirmed.
