The Archbishop of Canterbury is to step up his attacks on the Government with an ‘unprecedented’ attempt to change the latest law tackling illegal migration.
The Most Rev Justin Welby is reportedly preparing to table amendments to the legislation in the House of Lords.
But it is ‘extremely unusual if not unprecedented’ for a member of the clergy to try to change a flagship government Bill, a source told The Observer.

His proposed amendments to the Illegal Migration Bill, due to be scrutinised in the Lords this week, are set to include measures to improve safeguards against trafficking gangs.
It comes after the Archbishop branded the legislation – which will mean those arriving by clandestine means such as dinghies are detained and deported – ‘morally unacceptable’ in the Lords earlier this month.
He previously branded the Government’s Rwanda plan as ‘heartless’.
