The babies given a chance of life: Tiny children evacuated from Sudan are brought to safety by rescue teams across the region

Images have emerged of mothers clutching babies as they flee to countries such as Saudi Arabia, while a fragile ceasefire holds in Sudan after fighting broke out 11 days ago.

Foreign countries are desperately trying to get their citizens out of the country after conflict started between forces loyal to two rival generals, killing hundreds of people and leaving parts of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, in ruins.

Photographs show mothers weeping as navy personnel dressed in military fatigues carry their babies while holding the national flag in a rescue operation at Jeddah Sea Port in Saudi Arabia today.

The ship was carrying 1,687 civilians from more than 50 countries fleeing the violence and represents the largest evacuation effort by the Gulf kingdom so far.

Another image shows an elated mother as she arrives at Morocco’s Casablanca Mohammed V Airport.

A first plane carrying 136 Moroccan nationals stranded in Sudan landed on Wednesday as the nation began evacuating its citizens under the orders of King Mohammed VI, with a second plane expected to arrive later in the day.
