Baby killer's husband returns to house of horrors where foster boy, 1, shaken to death by monster mum

THE husband of baby killer Laura Castle has returned to live at the scene of her sickening crimes.

Scott Castle, 35, wept as he walked free from court after being cleared of allowing or causing the death of Leiland-James Corkill.

He is now back home and trying to rebuild his life as his wife Laura, 38, awaits a life sentence for murdering the baby they were planning to adopt.

She violently shook one-year-old Leiland-James and slammed his head on a sofa.

Scott is still too traumatised to speak publicly about the case.

He looked pale and drawn when he opened the door at his home in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, and said: “I don't want to talk to anyone at all about this."

A neighbour in the street in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, told how the case had shocked local residents.

She said: "To everyone in the street they seemed a perfectly normal couple so it was

horrifying to discover what had been going on in that house.

I'm having 'Ed Sheeran's' baby… but star's wife doesn't need to worry, says fan

"He's been back from time to time since their arrest, but we don't see much of him, he stays out of the way.

"I doubt she'll ever return to Barrow, but she'll be going nowhere for a long time. It was sickening to read what she did to that little boy."

Laura began abusing Leiland-James almost as soon as he was placed with her by social workers.

She spent nearly four months violently smacking him and branding him a “moaning whinge bag” in sickening texts.

She told how she “hated him” and regularly “leathered him” – before shaking him to death because he wouldn’t stop crying as she tried to feed him Weetabix for breakfast.

Castle had admitted the one-year-old’s manslaughter but denied his murder – but a jury at Preston crown court took just two-and-a-half hours to decide she had intended to kill the defenceless tot.

Scott was cleared of allowing or causing the baby’s death and of cruelty. Laura was also convicted of cruelty to Leiland-James.

An in-depth review is now taking place into the conduct of Cumbria County Council’s social services department.

Leiland-James died from severe head injuries in January last year after Laura violently shook him when he wouldn’t stop crying.

She lied to cops that he hurt himself when he accidentally fell off the sofa at the family home.

'N*BHEAD'

But tests showed his injuries were so severe they were as bad as if he had fallen from a tall building.

Despite her claims to be a loving mother, callous Laura told her husband she despised the tot, saying in one text: “I really hate him” and added: “He makes me so angry".

And she spoke of “leathering him” despite having promised social workers she would not use any physical punishment.

She branded him a “n*bhead” in one text and there was evidence of other abuse – Laura explained one bruise on his head to a friend by texting: “head met the coffee table again."

A safeguarding review into the case will be published in July.

John Readman, Executive Director for People at Cumbria County Council, said: “It has been truly shocking to hear how Leiland died at the hands of Laura Castle.

“Adoption should have been a new beginning for Leiland. That was cruelly taken away from him by the person who should have cared for him and kept him safe.

“We are deeply sorry for Leiland’s death, it should not have happened. Our thoughts and sympathies are with his birth family and all those who knew this little boy.

“There will, quite rightly, be questions about how the Castles were approved as adopters. Those questions are part of an independent review."
