Billionaire Elon Musk has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to chat with him on social media.
The world's richest man and Tesla CEO tweeted Putin's official Twitter handle yesterday, urging him to take part in a chat on audio-only platform Clubhouse.
"Would you like to join me for a conversation on Clubhouse," he wrote, before adding in Russian: "It would be a great honour to speak with you."
The Russian president, who famously refuses to go online because he believes the internet is a "CIA project", is yet to respond.
But the approach sparked a sensation on social media, with users showing their support and trying to guess what the pair would discuss.
One joked Musk might try to convince Putin to adopt the meme-based cryptocurrency dogecoin as Russia’s new currency.
The Tesla and SpaceX founder has regularly made jokes about dogecoin, sending its value soaring by more than 800 per cent.
Others questioned whether Putin was a member of Clubhouse before offering to send him an invite.
Clubhouse users must be invited before they can enter the platform. It allows members to stream audio messages instead of text.
While private voice chats are permitted, Clubhouse also stages large, conference-like events, where members can listen to conversations between high-profile figures.
As well as his native tongue, Putin speaks German and English.
Musk is known to be a fan of Clubhouse. He recently used the platform to predict that bitcoin was on the cusp of becoming a key player in the financial sector.
