Blistering Britain and the places most likely to hit 30C in June

UK weather: Remaining fine and dry this week

Britain’s mercury appears to be going from strength-to-strength, with the first signs of thermometers soaring now revealed. New weather maps, along with information from independent forecasters indicate June, the first month of summer, could come up trumps in terms of warmer weather, with the potential for the country’s first heatwave now laid bare.

Jim Dale, a senior meteorologist for British Weather Services, told Express.co.uk that a turn in the weather narrative is very possible.

He said: “(The hot weather) is still taking time to unfold everywhere. For now and the next seven days west is best and the east is least.

“A 25C will be broken in the west somewhere. However, longer term and ahead of the expected breakdown on June 7 and 8, on current trends, it’ll turn more humid with high 20s in south east England, possibly, but no firm promises as yet, reaching the next staging post of 30C.”

Weather maps show the country comfortably seeing highs of around 26C in and around the capital by June 9, with a slight indication that hot weather may be persisting.

Europe-wide GFS models show a hot plume rising through Europe, with its currents striking the UK from Tuesday, June 6, and gradually intensifying throughout next week.

The red outlines, pictured, show the hottest and most humid air sticking to Italy and southern Europe, but an orange glow engulfs much of England until at least June 11.

During this period the southern coast of England, including counties Kent, Sussex and Hampshire, will see highs of 24C – with a chance of places like Southampton meeting 25C predictions.

In Scotland, the city of Edinburgh could also see 24C highs as the hot weather stretches the entire country.

Maps do not yet show any 30C indicators, but can often change in the days leading up to weather events as more certainty arises.

What does the Met Office say?

The Met Office’s long-range forecast does not allude to any heatwaves, but gives a settled outlook for much of June, which hints towards a sizzling period.

From June 4 to 14 it says: “Settled conditions are likely to dominate throughout this period with plenty of dry and bright weather across the country, with the best of the sunshine expected across the west.

“Some low cloud is likely in eastern areas each day, but this will tend to burn back towards the North Sea coastline during the day.

“There is the very small risk of a shower in the south, and isolated patchy drizzle along eastern coasts.

“Temperatures will continue to be warmest towards the west, with an onshore wind making it feel cooler in eastern areas, especially the southeast where winds will be strongest.

“Towards the end of this period, the chance of showers in the south may start to increase. Further north, the generally fine pattern is likely to continue.”
