Body of 'amazing' nursery worker and mum Sophie Cartlidge found at home as man, 37, appears in court for murder and rape

A 37-YEAR-OLD man has faced court accused of the murder and rape of “amazing” nursery worker and mum Sophie Cartlidge.

Sophie's body was found by police on Friday morning in her home on Baldwin Avenue in Bottesford, Leicestershire, Grimsby Live reported.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 9.10am after reports of concern for a person’s safety.

Police said no weapons were involved. However, Sophie had suffered significant injuries at the property she shared with Andrew Grimes.

Grimes, 37, of Temple Road in Scunthorpe, appeared at Grimsby Magistrates' Court on Monday afternoon to face one charge of murder, alleged to have taken place between June 17 and 18, as well as two charges of rape.

He appeared wearing a protective mask and a light grey top.

Flanked by two custody officers when he appeared in the dock, Grimes spoke only to confirm his age and address.

No pleas were entered to any of the charges.

Martin Howarth, the prosecutor, appeared on video link to tell the court the case had to be referred to Hull Crown Court within 48 hours.

The defendant could not apply for bail, and was remanded in custody to appear at Hull Crown Court on Wednesday.

Defence lawyer Andrew Havery made no application after speaking to his client earlier.

Senior investigating officer Detective Chief Inspector Grant Taylor spoke of how the property in Baldwin Avenue was shared by Sophie and Andrew, although the defendant had a separate address.

The senior officer said: “Our thoughts remain with Sophie’s family and loved ones who continue to be supported by our specialist trained officer at this sad time.

“This is an isolated incident and there is no wider risk to members of the public. Our neighbourhood teams will continue to support and speak to local residents, if you see our officers please come and speak to them if you have any concerns."

He went on to thank those who had helped with enquiries throughout the investigation.

Sophie, a popular nursery worker and mum, was loved by both parents and children at the preschool – Little Acorns – where she worked.

The nursery would be closed for a week, as her friends and colleagues mourn the tragic loss.

“She was adored by absolutely everyone. She lit a room with her bubbly personality and the children doted on her.”

She has been described in tributes as the “kindest and loveliest woman”, known for making a difference to many lives.

“We are devastated to have lost our friend and colleague Sophie on Friday, June 18,” the nursery said on social media.

“We ask at this time for your continued patience and understanding while her friends and family grieve their loss.”

The statement thanked those who had laid flowers at the setting, and said updates would be provided by the committee as they continued to support their team.

One mum, whose son attended the nursery, said: “This really has broken my heart, this beautiful woman had such an impact on my son’s life. Sophie was always his favourite at nursery and they had such a special bond.

“She was adored by absolutely everyone. She lit a room with her bubbly personality and the children doted on her.”

The mum went on to call Sophie a “beautiful lady” who was “truly amazing” at her job.

Floral tributes have been left opposite Sophie's home on Baldwin Avenue, where police are continuing to maintain a presence.
