Body-surfing chicken catches five waves a day

Meet Mrs Chook – the body-surfing chicken catching five waves a day and making a splash with beach-goers

  • ‘Mrs Chook’ is a chicken who has learnt to surf waves
  • Owner Elaine Janes takes bird to beach every other day
  • Chicken catches five waves each session and ‘loves it’

A body-surfing chicken, named Mrs Chook, is making a big splash with beach-goers as catching five waves every second day.

Most chickens would cry foul over being thrown into the ocean but according to owner Elaine Janes, Mrs Chook developed a love for the sea during Covid lockdowns.

‘You don’t rush them (chickens) out there and throw them in,’ Ms Janes told 9News.

‘You just take them out there for little walks in the water.

‘And the next time you might go a little a bit further, a little slow introduction.’

Ms Janes takes Mrs Chook to Victoria’s Ocean Grove Beach, which is south east of Geelong, to catch the waves.

The aquatic chicken has become a favourite with locals and has even featured in TikTok videos.

After a session in the surf Mrs Chook is treated to a shower, a warm towel and sometimes even a blow-dry to make sure no feathers are ruffled.

Ms Janes insists Mrs Chook loves the wave riding.

‘You cannot make a chook like the water, particularly the ocean, but this one has a passion,’ she said.

‘She has a passion of being in the water and she has a passion for body surfing. Just have a look at her face, it is pure contentment, happiness, joy.’
