Boost your smartphone's battery life with these six simple tips

WE'VE all experienced the sinking feeling of seeing our mobile phone's battery running out.

But there are a few simple ways to make your power go for longer.

Andrew Cartledge, a smartphone expert at mobiles.co.uk, said there are several obvious causes for many people's battery issues.

But whether you've got an iPhone or an Android blower, you can do something to stop the drain.

Whether it be switching off a battery-intense application or simply avoiding certain battery-bashing behaviours, there are actions you can take to banish the battery blight.

Here are his six simple tips which will make sure your phone doesn't sputter out:

Switch off your location services

"Unless you’re about to go on a voyage into the unknown, and may need rescuing, or if you’re using your phone as a sat nav, you really don’t need your location service on 24/7.
"GPS is one of the coolest features on smart phones, and apps are continually developing to offer you localised entertainment suggestions and faster routes home. But you really don’t need either of those services when you’re sat on your sofa at home, in your pants."

Sort out your streaming

"It's not just a drainer on your 4G, streaming films, listening to music or watching videos of talking dogs, can have a detrimental effect on your phone’s battery.

"If you have a smart TV or Google Chromecast, use these devices’ streaming services to maintain your battery.

"Also, if you’re a social media addict, turn off your automatic video play – this will help preserve your battery too."

Disable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi

"Again, this seems like a fairly obvious one, but when you’re not using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, turn them off.

"When the services are running, they’re constantly searching for Wi-Fi networks or Bluetooth devices in your area, which will slowly run your battery down throughout the day."

Reduce your brightness

"This is one of the biggest battery draining culprits, alongside background running apps. Although those glowing colours look pretty, a bright screen can drain your battery in hours.

"The good news is that iPhone’s ambient light sensor will adjust the brightness your screen. If you haven’t yet, turn your Auto-Brightness on and you’ll save a bucket-load of battery life."

Disable notifications

"Not only do app notifications constantly distract you from everyday life, often for various pointless social media updates, they also drain the life from your phone.
"So if you don’t want to be notified when your old school friend Susan has gone Live on Facebook, pop into your settings, and turn off the notifications."
"This tip also works when checking email. By changing your settings to pull emails manually rather than automatically, you’ll give your phone a rest from persistently alerting you about new emails.
"Another way of making notifications kinder for your battery is turning off the vibrate function."

Turn on battery-saving mode

"Many smartphones these days have a battery-saving function, turning off a number of features that will help reduce the amount of power your phone is using.

"This is vital if you need to preserve the final bit of juice before you can get hold of a phone charger."
