Boris on the run: Embattled Prime Minister Johnson’s morning jog is interrupted when Dilyn the dog rushes to attack goose in St James’s Park

Boris Johnson’s morning run was abruptly disrupted today when Dilyn the dog pulled away from his lead to attack a goose.

The embattled prime minister was all smiles as he headed out for a jog with the dog he shares with his fiancée Carrie Symonds.

But his peace was shortlived when the Jack Russell cross spotted a Canadian goose on a footpath in St James’s Park, Westminster.

Photographs show the three-year-old dog bounding after the startled bird while Mr Johnson offers a thumbs up.

It comes after the Electoral Commission yesterday opened a formal investigation into the funding of the lavish refurbishment of Mr Johnson’s Number 10 flat.

Mr Johnson and Miss Symonds adopted their dog Dilyn in 2018 before taking the pooch along on the election campaign trail.

Dilyn was rescued by Friends of Animals Wales from a breeder in South Wales.

Among other alleged misdeeds, Dilyn has been accused of cocking his leg over the handbag of a departing No 10 aide, gnawing antiques at Chequers and taking an unfortunate amorous interest in the leg of Dominic Cummings.

Downing Street yesterday said Mr Johnson was willing to co-operate fully with the inquiry into who paid for renovations on his Downing Street flat.

‘We are now satisfied that there are reasonable grounds to suspect that an offence or offences may have occurred,’ announced the Electoral Commission yesterday.

It has sweeping powers to demand documents and interview witnesses under caution. Failure to comply or tell the truth is a criminal offence.

His fiancée Miss Symonds, who masterminded the costly redecoration, could also face questions.

No serving prime minister has ever been interviewed under caution in relation to an alleged breach of the law.

The inquiry follows a string of revelations in the Mail suggesting a £58,000 cost overrun may have been paid originally by the Conservative Party before being covered by Tory donor Lord Brownlow.

Mr Johnson angrily told MPs yesterday that he had settled the bill with his own money. But he ducked repeated questions about who originally paid out when the work at 11, Downing Street was completed last year. Failure to declare donations is an offence under electoral law, punishable by fines of up to £20,000.

The Electoral Commission can pass on investigations to the police if it uncovers evidence of criminal offences or believes its efforts are being frustrated.
