Boss divides the internet after revealing says she never hires anyone who doesn’t send a thank you email after an interview

A EXECUTIVE managing editor has sparked controversy after she revealed she won't hire an candidate if they don't send a 'thank you email' after the interview.

Jessica Liebman says that it's her "number one rule" and that it reveals all you need to know about that person.

Writing for Business Insider, she says: "If someone doesn’t send a thankyou email, don’t hire them.

“The truth is, the hiring process can uncover only so much.

"You’re often basing your decision on a small sample of data that you collected during a few hours of speaking with them, sometimes not even in person.”

But not everyone agrees with her stance.

Rebecca Slatkin replied to Jessica on Twitter: "You know taking a day off work, going someplace unfamiliar, then participating in 8 hours of technical and personal interviews is exhausting, right?"

Marijam Didzalvyte wrote "These employees will be creating value for your company, it's you that should be thankful. No wonder people leave after a few months, sounds like a toxic work environment where only the yay sayers are accepted."

Nat, who works in HR said: "Have you been sending everyone who applies thank you notes too? Signalling goes both ways."

Jon Gary wrote: "Do you thank the candidate for the interview? You're not giving them a gift, even if you make them an offer. It's a business agreement, not a bar mitzvah."

After interviewing hundreds of hopefuls over a decade, she penned that not sending a follow-up email is the "number one mistake" an interviewee can make.

She says hiring managers should always “expect a thank you email”, adding “you should never make an offer to someone who neglected to send one”.

The reasons behind this strict rule is that it shows the person really wants the job, and how someone presents in interviews may not translate into the effectiveness of the role.

But plenty agreed with Jessica, who works for Insider Inc.

Melissa Hope said: "It's professional courtesy to send a thank you email. Plenty of people with talent out there who still have manners.

Kimberly Bryant said: "So I see where she's coming from. But just think the absolute no is certainly a rigid criteria."

But the majority of the 3,600 likes on the tweet were from people who were offended that she would suggest such a thing.

Many arguments said that some people from various backgrounds or due to disabilities may not have been taught that this is a good thing to do after an interview – so would be missing out.

She writes: “While sending a thankyou note doesn’t necessarily guarantee the person will be a good hire, it gives you the tiniest bit more data: The candidate is eager, organised, and well mannered enough to send the note.

“It shows resourcefulness, too, because the candidate often has to hunt down an email address the interviewer never gave them.”

In 2012, Liebman wrote a similar article detailing her expectations for thank you emails.

She said the interviewee should thank her for taking the time to talk with them, restate they wanted the job and add a quick plug about why they would be perfect for it.

She said if she didn’t get an email like this, she would “assume you don’t want the job” and “think you’re disorganised and forgot about following up”, adding “there is a much higher shot I’ll forget about you”.

The Sun Online has contacted Jessica Liebman for a comment.
