Brit couple stranded as quad bike crash turns paradise trip into holiday hell

A couple's paradise trip turned into a holiday from hell after a quad bike crash left them stranded in the Caribbean.

Heidi Pugsley, from Wales, broke her leg in two places and her wrist in three when she and partner Cerys Atterbury fell off a quad bike in Jamaica last week.

Fears have grown for the pair after Heidi, who is a recent cancer survivor, was hospitalised "in a lot of pain" and is at risk of developing blood clots.

Their hearts dropped after they were told their holiday insurance would not be able to cover Heidi's medical bills and it would cost thousands of pounds just to get home.

Cerys says her partner urgently needs surgery to aid her leg and confirmed that they are isolated and on their own as they fight to get home.

"On Wednesday [doctors] told her she needs to get home urgently," she told the South Wales Argus. "[They said] 'you need an operation – the longer you leave it, the more serious it will get.'"

The couple received an "eye-opening" experience at a local hospital after Cerys had to help a hospital worker put a plaster cast on Heidi's leg.

Cerys added that they took out a policy that included "dangerous activities" which they are currently in dispute over.

To desperate couple will now have to stump out costs of around £8,000 for the initial treatment they received in the Jamaican hospital, as well as new plane tickets to return home.

"It's a massive devastation," Cerys said. "We're on our own, basically. We contacted the British Embassy but they can't do anything."

She said they had to pay $400 [£317.86] just to use a wheelchair at their hotel and have reluctantly launched a fundraiser in a bid to get home.

"Unfortunately we've had to set up a Gofundme page… to try and get her the care she needs," she said.

"We're basically stuck out here, trying to get the next flight we possibly can home. We've literally been left to fend for ourselves."
