Britons must now shelve hopes of a dry January and brace for torrents of cold lashing rain. According to the UK Met Office, most of the “cloud and blustery showers” will be experienced in the north of the country. Today western Scotland experienced 46 mm of rain with more expected to hit.

The UK Met Office forecast for today read: “Early rain, heavy at times, clearing eastwards.

“This rain will finally clear through East Anglia and southeast England in the late afternoon.

“There will be some early hill snow in the north.

“Brighter, colder weather with heavy, blustery showers, wintry over hills, follows from the west.

The Met Office stated the outlook throughout the country will be “windy and blustery”.

The medium-term forecast for the UK will see more heavy showers throughout the country until at least Wednesday.

The outlook for Monday until Wednesday of next week is as follows: “Outbreaks of rain spreading east on Monday.

“The southeast of the country will stay dry.”

The Met Office added that skies will “brighten from the northwest on Tuesday and Wednesday”.

However, there will be “overnight fog patches” during the first half of next week.

The heavy rainfall has led to accidents on Britain’s motorways.

A motorway on the outskirts of Liverpool has been closed by police after a car flipped onto its side during wet conditions.

About the incident, a spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: “Police were called at 11am.

“One vehicle had slipped on its side.

“No injuries were reported.

“The M62 is closed as officers recover the vehicle.”

Commenting on the extremely wet conditions one reading of the Liverpool Echo called tonyblueagasket said: “It was a biblical storm this morning so drivers should drive to conditions.”
