Britain to bask in 20C Indian Summer – but not everyone in UK will benefit

Brits can get ready to bask in the sun again – an Indian Summer is heading our way.

But sadly not everyone will be dashing to the beach as the warm weather due at the end of the month will be mainly in the south.

Wet and windy conditions are more likely in northern areas, say, forecasters.

Jim Dale, of British Weather Services, said: “It’s a long way off but tentatively yes, for the final week in the south we will be touching 20C if all goes to plan.

“Come late September and early October is a sustained southerly flow indicating an Indian Summer.”

The mercury could peak at 22C on September 24.

The news comes after a record-breaking summer that saw records smashed across the board.

It was the joint hottest summer on record that saw a new summit reached for the country's hottest ever day.

With a mean temperature of 17.1C, 2022 matched 2018 for the warmest we've had – but it's likely the mid-summer heatwave that will live long in the memory.

Mark McCarthy of the National Climate Information Centre told the Independent said: “For many, this summer’s record-breaking heat in July – when temperatures reached 40.3°C at Coningsby in Lincolnshire – will be the season’s most memorable aspect.

“However, for England to achieve its joint warmest summer takes more than extreme heat over a couple of days, so we shouldn’t forget that we experienced some persistently warm and hot spells through June and August too.”

The Met Office has since said that it is likely that British summers are likely to last longer, be drier, hotter and come with an increased risk of drought coupled with warmer, drier autumns.

The changes are expected by researchers at the forecaster to kick in from the mid-2020s onwards.
