Britain’s 'most expensive beer' costs the same as FOUR pub roasts – the price will leave you with a bitter taste

BRITAIN’S “most expensive beer” costs the same as FOUR pub roasts at almost £50.

Drinkers have compared spending their hard-earned cash on a glass of The Bruery's Mash and Coconut imperial brown ale to "flushing money down the toilet".

Currently, a 750ml bottle of the 13 per cent ABV beer costs a whopping £47.

But the average price for a Sunday roast in London pub is around £11.53 meaning you could splash the cash spent on a bottle of the fancy coconutty ale on four dinners – and have money left over for pudding.

It comes as Wetherspoons slashed the price of a pint to just 99p at 671 of its pubs in a bid to entice back more punters following the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the price of beer elsewhere is on the rise, averaging £4.44 for a pint in the UK.

The pricey California-brewed booze, on sale at The Craft Beer Co in Brixton, south London, is described as a "classic bourbon barrel-aged imperial brown ale" withnotes of coconut.

The capital is famed for its astronomical beer prices but one Friday night lager lover, Roxie, said she'd never pay such an astronomical price for just-over a pint.

You’re literally flushing money down the toilet

She said: "That’s so much money for something that is gone so quickly. Does it really taste that much better that it warrants paying so much?

"You’re literally flushing money down the toilet."

Lidia Kiszewska, who has more than seven years of experience in the beer industry, told The Sun: "This price range is fairly unusual to see, however it's not the first time I've seen this."

Lidia, resident expert at From Our Cellar, said she was "familiar" with breweries releasing special-edition high ABV beers that are "quite dear".

ALL THE THINGS YOU CAN GET FOR THE PRICE OF ‘BRITAIN’S MOST EXPENSIVE BEER

HERE is everything you could buy for the same price as a bottle of The Bruery's Mash and Coconut.

  • A whopping 47 99p pints of Ruddles Best or Greene King IPA at Wetherspoons
  • 18 pints of Bud Light at 'Spoons, costing £2.49 each
  • Two fish and chip dinners at Youngs, priced at £17.99 each
  • Four roast dinners in London at £11.53 per plate
  • Four double Tanqueray gins at Greene King, priced at £9.80 each
  • Four Wetherspoons cocktail pitchers for 2 for £12
  • Three bottles of Hardy's Chardonnay at Wetherspoons, at £10.59 each
  • A bottle of premium sparkling Vilmart Cuvée Cellier Premier Cru Brut NV, £45 from Waitrose

The expert added all sorts of fancy things go into a highly-priced beer, from the way it is fermented to special artwork on the logo or it being brewed in a small batch.

She added: "That's quite a high price bracket, but personally I'm not surprised."

And staff at the Craft Beer Co said splashing out on a pricey bottle of Mash and Coconut would be equivalent to splurging £200 on a super fancy bottle of wine.

It comes as the Chancellor Rishi Sunak announced a freeze on alcohol duty in his budget last week, which will see the price of a pint fall by 3p – but not until 2023.

This is the second time in two years the Chancellor has thrown a lifeline to Britain's struggling boozers.

Increases to duty on beer, cider, spirits and wine were scrapped in last year’s Budget for only the second time in 20 years.

It means this is the third time any Chancellor has frozen the duty in two decades.

Vice chairman of the Campaign for Pubs Dawn Hopkins said there's "no way" the move would see a price change "across the bar".

She said: "Prices are soaring and these changes won't come in until 2023 anyway."

But other industry insiders welcomed the news.

Addressing the hikes, Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer & Pub Association, told The Sun: “The freeze on beer duty will be welcomed by pub goers and brewers alike and shows the Chancellor listened to the 134,000 people who signed the Long Live The Local petition.

"It will save £177million and secure 9,000 vital jobs across the country.

“Changes to alcohol duties are a major change for our sector.

"The cut to draught beer is worth £62million and is great news for community pubs.

"However, it is vital overall beer duty is still reduced for Britain world class brewers.”
