A London playground made up of just one slide has been dubbed ‘the saddest in the UK’.
The children’s’ play area in Tooting Broadway, South London was even called a ‘sad art installation’ by some online.
Rex Osborn, a Labour council candidate posted photos of the lone slide on Twitter,
He said: ‘For 44 years Conservative Wandsworth Council neglected Tooting Broadway. This sad, dismal council playground is symbolic of that neglect.
‘If elected to the council, on 14 July, I’ll get this playground upgraded.’
The entire playground is made up of a single slide, a bench and two railings surrounding them
A Labour council candidate and the local Labour MP said the lacklustre park was part of the ‘remnants’ of the Conservative Council which has run Wandsworth for the last 40 years
One Twitter user suggested locals were overreacting to the quality of the playground, telling them to ‘get a grip’
Many Twitter users criticised the small play area online, with one even calling it ‘pathetic’. Another commented: ‘What a sad playground.’
Labour MP for Tooting, Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, also blamed the uninspiring playground on the previous Conservative council, saying it was: ‘The remnants of 44 years of Tory rule in Wandsworth. The saddest looking playground, ever. With a new Labour Council now in place, we’re going to change it.’
One Twitter user said: ‘That’s a playground? I’ve seen many in poor shape, but you know it’s a playground.
‘It definitely needs help and TLC. Upgrade is a must and bigger is better, when it comes to play equipment for kids. Do at least one thing for the kids for goodness sake. Good luck!’
Another person commented: ‘Possibly the worst saddest playground I’ve ever seen.’ One questioned: ‘Ignoring politics for a moment to ask a genuine question: Is this the worst playground in the country?’
However, some people came to the playgrounds defence. One said: ‘Get a grip that’s not neglect just undersized. Try up north to see what neglect is. Jesus it’s even painted.’
Aydin Dikerdem, Labour cabinet lead for housing, told MyLondon: ‘The council’s new administration has a mandate to deliver much needed change for Wandsworth and we are determined to make the borough a better and fairer place to live.
‘We have far-reaching and comprehensive plans to deliver on our manifesto commitments, particularly when it comes to improving facilities on our estates as well as services for children and young people which is one of our core priorities.’
